Team Overview
The UCSD Water Ski Team has roots dating back to 1987. Over time the program has grown substantially. Under the guidance of Coach Bill Schneiderwind and his staff the team has achieved the status of finishing in the top ten of all collegiate water ski programs in the United States. In 2006 the Tritons qualified for and competed in its 5th consecutive National Collegiate Water Ski Association National Championship. Even though UCSD is a Division II school for NCAA sports, the Water Skiing Tritons have achieved a level of competitiveness to ski with the top Water Ski Schools in the United States. UCSD is considered by far the finest academic institution among the top ten schools that compete in this US Olympic Committee sponsored sport. Since there is no distinction in the sport of Water Skiing between Amateur and Professional, the top 6 schools in the United States are able to recruit and offer financial assistance to world class athletes around the globe. A NCWSA National Championship will typically look more like an IWSF World Championship, than a collegiate event. It is for these reasons that the accomplishments of the Triton team members is remarkable. 99% of the skiers that compete for UCSD came to school as recreational skiers at best. Over the schools history the team boasts 4 All Americans and National All Stars, and over 72 All Conference skiers. The 2004 Women's team set records in route to a sweep of all three events of Slalom, Trick and Jump, bringing home a Women's Division 2 Championship Title. The combined team brought home a bronze medal in Division 2. In 2002,2003, 2005 and 2006 UCSD came in 8th,12th, 9th, and 9th again respecitvely in NCWSA Division1. The team trains in San Diego's Mission Bay, and at sponsor fresh water sites in Palm Desert, Bakersfield, and the Rio Hardy River in Mexico. The team is sponsored by Master Craft ski boats and rotates new boats through the program on a yearly basis. Collegiate Water Skiing combines men's and women's events into the same tournaments, and although the men and women compete separately, their scores are combined to determine team overall champions. The teams train, travel and compete together at all tournaments. UCSD boasts the best academic education among all water ski schools in the United States. While the schools culture does not allow for financial assistance, in some cases the team is able to assist prospective students with entry/acceptance to the University. If you are a competitive water skier, or just a recreational water skier who loves being on the water and meeting life long friends, we'd like to hear from you.
