Triton Women’s Water Polo Ranked 8th in Nation
Wednesday, April 16, 2008 The UCSD Women’s Club Water Polo team placed third in one of the best club leagues in the nation after the championship tournament that the Tritons hosted this past weekend. The first victory against USC was an easy win with a final score of 10-1. Goalies Christel Smith, Mary Hildebrand and Melissa Sathavipat all contributed to blocking almost every attempted shot from USC. The game was certainly a team victory with players across the board contributing to the high score.The second game was a tough loss against UCLA in the deciding game that determined which team would play at Nationals in Oregon. After the first quarter, both teams were tied with two goals each. UCLA, however, was able to pull ahead for a final score of 4-6. Christel Smith did extremely well in the goal, blocking many difficult attempted shots by UCLA. Erin Choi won three out of the four sprints, starting the Tritons off on defense almost every time. Shelley Dykstra, Maryam Sharifzadeh, and Kristen Langford all contributed to the four goals. The third and final game, which determined the third and fourth ranked teams, was a hard earned victory that ended in two three minute quarters of overtime. After the fourth quarter, both teams were tied 8-8 and continued to remain tied after the first quarter of overtime. The tritons pulled ahead in the second quarter by scoring two goals, bringing the final score 10-8, Tritons. Casey Armstrong, Shelley Dykstra, Whitney Landgrebe, and Kristen Langford all contributed to the final goal count. Erin Choi won all six sprints, while Mary Hildebrand blocked many attempted shots in the goal. Overall, the team had a successful season, losing only two league games and placing third in the league overall and 8th nationally.
