Pacific Division Championships in Cal Poly SLO
Monday, October 29, 2007 In their first game of the tournament the 3rd seeded Tritons faced off against 6th seeded Cal Maritime Academy. After a four quarter defensive struggle, both teams were deadlocked in a 3-3 tie forcing overtime. In the first five minutes of the six minutes of overtime, the Tritons scored twice and shut down their opponents offensively until about twenty seconds left in the period, when Cal Maritime managed score and make it a 5-4 game. UC San Diego then ran out the clock to win the game.In their second game of the day the Tritons took on host and 2nd seeded Cal Poly SLO. The Tritons jumped out to an early two goal lead with goals from Billy Hayes and Keary Schlactus. Cal Poly fought back scoring 2 counter attack goals and one out of two meters. In the second and third periods the Mustangs intensified their counter attack and made it 7-3 going into the fourth quarter. But the Tritons refused to go away and scored three unanswered goals, bringing the score to 7-6. With a minute left the Tritons got the ball back but couldn't come up with a goal, going on to lose 7-6. In their last game San Diego played USC. After several lead changes both teams were tied at 7 apiece at the end of the 4th quarter. Two three-minute overtime quarters ensued and each time scored once bringing the score to another tie at 8-8. USC then capitalized on a loose ball in front of the goal in sudden death and took third place overall with a 9-8 victory over UC San Diego.
