Men's Water Polo at UC Santa Barbara Tournament
Sunday, October 18, 2009 The UC San Diego team got off to a slow start on Saturday morning with an 8-12 loss to USC, but bounced back in the afternoon with a strong defensive showing against the University of San Diego Toreros. Sunday morning's game was a thriller all the way up until the final buzzer. The Tritons jumped out early on Cal Poly to go up by a score of 4-2 in the opening period. It was a tight game from then on, which was forced into overtime with a 9-9 tie at the end of regulation. In the overtime periods UC San Diego was able to get on the board and hold the Mustangs scoreless to end with a 10-9 overtime victory, the second win in program history over Cal Poly. After the grueling game UCSD was taken down in the late minutes of the final period by UC Irvine. A penalty score from UCI turned out to be the final goal of the match in a 5-6 loss by the Tritons. UC San Diego is back in action next weekend going into the California Southern Section Division Championship after earning a strong 3rd seed. The top four teams will advance to the California State Championship to compete for a bid to Nationals. Back to News & Results
