Team Overview
UC San Diego’s Men’s Ultimate has ranked in the top 10 teams throughout the nation 3 out of the past 4 years. In fact the Ultimate B team consistently ranks in the top 50 in the nation and has been known to take down some big name A Teams. Anyone who loves frisbee, fun, competition and camaraderie should give the infamous Air Squids a try. Last Year Featuring a team whose average age was under 20 in the strongest region in the country with only 1 bid, the Air Squids just missed going to nationals for the fourth consecutive year in a row. Though young, Ultimate aficionados throughout the country have pin-pointed UC San Diego as the next power house in ultimate. At the Trouble in Vegas tournament, the Squids took down perennial power house UBC and had a strong showing against the defending national champions Florida University in a 15-12 outing. However on day 2, the Air Squids lost to UCLA on double game point to finish 8th in the tournament. The Squids came out to So-Cal Sectionals motivated and refocused blowing through all opponents on day 1. Day 2 left UC San Diego in the semi-finals against UCLA where the Squids showed complete domination beating the Bruins 15-0. However, Santa Barbara proved to have too much experience in the finals and squeaked past UCSD 15-12. At Regionals in Phoenix Arizona, the Squids rolled into the semi-finals against Colorado University while beating teams like Arizona and UCLA on the way. UC San Diego lost 15-11 to Colorado who went on to be Nationals finalists. With 2 bids for the Southwest Region next year and a young group of talented players looking to show everyone what they’ve got, UC San Diego is set for the national stage again in 2008. The Sport of Ultimate Ultimate combines elements of soccer, football and basketball in a fast-paced game, played with a frisbee, where everyone is a quarterback and everyone is a receiver. Ultimate began in 1968 in Maplewood, New Jersey when a group of Columbia High School students first played on an asphalt parking lot at their high school. As those students graduated from high school, the game spread to the college level. The first intercollegiate Ultimate game occured on Nov. 6, 1972, between Princeton and Rutgers, in New Brunswick, NJ. They played on the anniversary of the first ever intercollegiate football game, also played between those same two schools. Today, the game is played competitively by over 25,000 UPA and WFDF amateur athletes in over 35 countries, as well as countless casual players. Ultimate is played by people from all walks of life. From high school students, to the still thriving college game, to the highly competitive club teams all over the world, to the many thousands of people who play in informal summer leagues, Ultimate is a game for everyone. |
