UCSD Men’s Ultimate Competes in Southwest Regional Competition
Wednesday, April 30, 2008 This past weekend, the Men's Ultimate Team competed in the Southwest Regional Competition. The Squids entered the 16 team tournament seeded 6th with a goal of making Nationals. Only the top two teams progress to Nationals, so the Squids had to upset some teams if they wanted to move on.On day 1, the Squids faced Occidental and Colorado's B team. Both teams played hard but had very little experience and fell easily to the Squids. The third game of the day was against Claremont, the third seeded team at Regionals. Claremont came out strong and began scoring quickly with lots of full field throws. Sophomore Guy Hughes played hard defense but the precision throws to both Claremont's star receivers was too much for UCSD. The Squids ended up losing 11-15. In the final game of the day, the Squids began their path through the backdoor bracket by beating the Air Force Academy with great plays by Christopher Walczak. On Sunday, the Squids began facing Colorado State. This heated game was close early on but Josh Nickerson gave the Squids a solid lead with several great catches in the end zone. The Squids ended up beating Colorado State 15-11. The next game was against UCSB. The game was fast paced with very few mistakes on either end. Eventually, the tired squids lost as time ran out 14-12. This ended UCSD's season, but the future looks bright: the team is very young and will only be losing 6 seniors. Colorado and Arizona held seed in the tournament to make it to Nationals.
