Team Overview
Very little was heard about triathlon until 1974 at San Diego's Mission Bay where a group of friends began training together. Amongst them were runners, swimmers and cyclists and before long training sessions turned into informal races. The first Mission Bay Triathlon was held on September 25th 1974. This date is celebrated as the day modern triathlon began. UCSD student athletes are taking advantage of the school's great location to train for this sport. Members from the UCSD Triathlon team compete all over the United States throughout the long triathlon season that begins in February and continues through November. The team competes in the West Coast Collegiate Triathlon Conference (WCCTC) along with the other UC and California state schools, Cal Poly SLO, The University of Reno Nevada, and Stanford. The collegiate championship races are Olympic distance (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run) however members race all distances from short sprint triathlons to half and full Ironmans. Coached by Sergio Borges, an elite level Ironman distance triathlete himself, and a certified Level III USA Triathlon and Level II USA cycling coach, the team has been very successful in past seasons; In 2006 the team was 3rd at the Collegiate National Championships in Reno, Nevada. In both 2005 and 2004 the team was 4th at the National Championships, and in 2005 had individual wins of both the men and women's races by Brenden O'Brien and Amanda Felder. Felder was also was third individually in 2007. In the hopes of sending a competitive team to nationals for the 2008 season the team hosted a triathlon race in April 2007 on Fiesta Island in Mission Bay. Many schools in the collegiate conference as well as some of the top local pro and amateur triathletes attended the successful "Tritonman" race. The team is lucky to have the Triathlon Club of San Diego in the area that hosts a lot of smaller races and triathlon events. The team uses these as hard workouts and tune-ups during the season and they are a great way to introduce the sport of triathlon to new members.
