UCSD Table Tennis Loses Division Title to USC in Regionals
Tuesday, February 19, 2008 The final regionals of the year featured five major participants – CalTech, UC Irvine, UCLA, USC, and UCSD. Generously hosted by the San Diego Table Tennis Association at their beautiful gym in Balboa Park, the meet had a full array of Junior Varsity, Women, and Varsity matches.UCSD brought along ten JV players, all of them gaining valuable tournament experience and skills in hopes of improving and perhaps making the Varsity team next year. The Women’s team, with members Nina Xue, Roxanna Pourmirzaie, Adrianne Lo, Beverly Wang, and Rachel Rudibaugh, played well in losses to CalTech and Division leader USC. On the Varsity side, UCSD split a very close decision with USC. Co-captain Derrick Poon gave a valiant effort against USA National team member Mikhail Kazantsev, eventually falling 3-1 in sets. The other co-captain, John Springer, defeated his opponent in straight sets. UCSD’s highest rated player, Kinson Ma, dropped an initial set against USC captain Jordan Fisher before rebounding back and taking the match. New Varsity member Sam Lee fought impressively in a tight match, narrowing losing in 4 sets. With this split, USC regains the division title from UCSD. The Tritons will now prepare for a possible invitation to the National Championships in Wisconsin later this spring. More Headlines: There are no more headlines. ![]() |
