September 21, 2009 UCSD SURF TEAM TRYOUTSfor 09/10 NSSA College Season Anyone interested in trying out for the UCSD Surf Team is encouraged to participate in at least 2 or more of these practices. Where: Blacks Beach off of Black Gold exit. Meet at the lower gated parking lot for each practice Dates: Friday Sept 25 at 5:30pm Wednesday Sept 30 at 6:00am Wednesday Oct 7 at 6:00am Saturday Oct 10 at 7:00am (Team Selection this day) Saturday & Sunday Oct 17-18 6:00am First NSSA contest at Black's Beach Spots Available: (12) Men's Shortboard (4) Women's Shortboard (2) Longboard (Men's & Women's) The UCSD Surf team has a long and illustrious history dating back to the 70's. Including multiple national championships and current Capt. Marty Weinstein who is the men's NSSA college national champion. Surf Places Top Three at Huntington
Sunday, November 8, 2009 This past weekend, November 7-8th 2009 the UCSD Surf Team competed in their 2nd season competition. Rebounding from a third place finish in the opening season competition, the team excelled in exception surf and conditions. The swell was 5-6feet all weekend and the A team excelled through the opening rounds. Stand out surfers were A team shortboarders, Kevin Craig, Jordan English, Kokoro Tomatsuri, Max Karnig, Perry Strall and Marty Weinstein, shortboard womens, Marissa Hood and Chelsea Rauhut, and longboarder Brian Franz. Brian Franz placed 4th in the first competition. Though the conditions were tough with high surf and south pulsing currents the team did great looking at another top 3 finish. Kokoro and Marty both advanced to the finals, both surfers scoring some of the highest waves of the entire competition. In the quarter finals, Kokoro scored a near perfect heat total of a 19 out of 20. Marty scored three perfect 10 point rides throughout the competition, one of those high scores being in the final. The competition was tough, but the UCSD surf team is looking strong and ready to excel in the next event in December at Ventura Harbor.
