Triton Women’s Soccer Competes in UCLA Bruin Classic
Wednesday, April 23, 2008 This past weekend the UCSD Women's Club Soccer Team attended the annual UCLA Bruin Classic, making it to the semifinals before ending the weekend with a 1-2 overall record. In their weekend opener the team faced a familiar opponent in UCSB in an afternoon game. The Tritons came out with a vengeance, remembering their 3-0 loss to the Gauchos just two weeks earlier in the semifinals of their hosted tournament. Everyone left their effort on the field, tackling hard, passing well and defending as a team. Although the Tritons went down by one in the first half, they definitely made the Gauchos flustered in the first half. In the second half, midfielder Caitlin Peluffo hit a long-range shot from the left side of the field that sailed in to the goal just over the UCSB goalkeeper. Midfielder Jamie Plunkett was essential in shutting down a key player in the UCSB offense to help out her team. The Tritons continued to play hard through the rest of the game and it was a battle between the two teams. UC Santa Barbara managed to get one more goal in to end the game with a Triton loss with a score of 2-1.In the second game in pool play the Tritons faced the Oregon State Beavers. Even after ending their tough game with the Gauchos just 50 minutes before the start of their second game the Tritons offense turned on and came away with 4 goals against the Beavers. Ellen Chunn scored on an 18 yard shot after beating two defenders on the left side of the field then cutting the ball back to score off a right-footed shot. Jenny Lundergan scored off a long clear from sweeper Christy Eschborn by beating the entire Beaver defense to the ball and having a 1 on 1 shot with the keeper. Lundergan assisted another of the Triton's goals, when midfielder Nolie Peirini scored off a cross Lundergan played across the box. Senior and four year veteran of the UCSD women's club team, Jenny Ross scored a picture-perfect header goal off a corner from Peluffo as she jumped higher than you would expect from anyone on the field. The Triton defense was solidly led by Eschborn, Lauren Highleyman, and Deanna Leon and goalkeeper Darcy Fant and prevented any goals by the Beavers. The Tritons won 4-0. Earning the wildcard seed and a spot in the semifinals, the Tritons played UC Santa Barbara again Sunday morning for the teams' third matchup in two weekends of play. Although the Tritons played a well-fought game injuries and sickness shortened the roster and ultimately the Gauchos were able to beat the Tritons again. The Gauchos' first goal came from a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box, off a questionable foul call. The Gauchos got one more in the first half off a penalty kick because of a foul in the box. Even though they were down by two after the first half and frustration set in at times, the Tritons picked up their game in the second half and played the Gauchos well, barely missing a couple of really close chances to score. The whole team was playing the best they could with multiple players in positions they often don't find themselves. In the end, the Gauchos scored a final time off of another free kick just outside of the box burying the ball in the far lower left corner of the goal. Although the tournament result wasn't the same as previous years when the Tritons have won the Bruin Classic, the captains were very impressed with the team's flexibility in adjusting to lineup changes and still working so hard on the field to represent UCSD in a truly admirable way.
