Team Overview
The UC San Diego Sailing team is making a name for itself with an impressive 06’-07’ season last year in which UCSD sailing team placed first in several important regatta and became nationally ranked. The 07’-08’ season marks an opportunity for the team to build on their impressive standings from last year. Under the leadership of Varsity A crew returning captain Ben-J Amen and with a number of returning experienced sailors, the team has enormous potential for depth and skill. Alumni Ryan Lorence has also returned to the team in a coaching capacity. The team hopes to attend more intersectional regattas this year in order to have an opportunity to compete against teams outside of their district. The team competes in co-ed and women’s regattas in California as well at out of state intersectionals, including the women’s Pacific Coast Championships in Hawaii this year. The future of the UCSD Sailing team is filled with enormous potential as more talented sailors emerge each year and the team remains committed to improvement. What is collegiate sailing? The UCSD Sailing team normally races 14ft-colliegiate FJ’s in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association (PCIYRA: http://www.collegesailing.org/pciyra/) There are two people to a boat, a skipper and a crew. The team competes in regattas all over the California Coast approximately every other weekend in the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. Collegiate sailing is a great way to meet new people and have the opportunity to travel all over California while learning about a unique and exciting sport. All experience levels are welcome, and those with prior experience are encouraged to join. Practice The team has seven FJ’s, one of which was newly purchased last year. We sail out of Mission Bay Yacht club on beautiful Mission Bay. Arguably one of the best venues in college sailing Mission Bay offers beautiful weather and consistent winds. We normally hold practices two or three times a per week from approximately 3:00 to 6:00pm. We also hold weekend training clinics in order to help train inexperienced new sailors and to hone the skills of those who have sailed before. We do realize that it can be difficult for everyone’s schedule to allow the same days of practice and we try to be as flexible as possible with practice days. For those who want to improve their skills, practice is critical and those who are enthusiastic and motivated will improve very quickly. Rides for students without cars can be provided and generally pick up at the Sungod turnaround thirty minutes before practice. Regattas We attend a large number of regattas every quarter, so it’s never too late to join. To see the current regatta schedule, please visit the PCIYRA website (http://www.collegesailing.org/pciyra/) and click on “PCCSC Regatta Information”. For new sailors attending regattas is a great way to gain experience and really understand what college sailing is all about. Sailors who are serious about sailing and who show their dedication to the team, practice and becoming better sailors are those who are chosen to attend regattas. Experience and skill are not the sole deciding factors in regatta attendance, so once again, newcomers are encouraged join. |
