Women's Rugby Splits Games in Arizona
Wednesday, April 8, 2009 The women’s rugby team hosted the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos this past weekend on their home field. San Diego and Santa Barbara have been long time rivals, so this game meant a lot to both teams. After losing to the Gauchos in their first league game, the Tritons were especially pumped up and ready to dominate the pitch. The girls were fired up from the get go and it was visibly apparent that Santa Barbara was intimidated. The Gauchos were facing a new team this time around, and they knew it. Senior captain Julia Anderson said, “ We’ve been lacking intensity in our prior games, but not this one. It started in the warm-ups with everyone going hard and talking loud. You could feel and sense the fire on the field, and it was great. Everyone came ready to play, and our opponents knew it.”The Tritons started out hard, and they played with great intensity. They were winning rucks and scrums that just two weeks ago they would have been blown off of. Early in the first half, they brought the ball down the field, and got within field goal range. They decided to kick for points, and sophomore Jenna Anderson kicked the conversion, and put San Diego up 3 to 0 over Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara came back hard after the kick, and they scored a try putting them up 5 to 3. The Tritons were not caving in though. Senior captain Rebecca Williams completed a try shortly following Santa Barbara’s, and then Jenna Anderson made the conversion putting the Tritons up again with a score of 10 to 5. Both teams fought hard and Santa Barbara slipped in another try and a conversion kick before the half expired giving them a lead of 12 to 10. In the second half the Tritons came out fired up and hit the field hard. At the end of the first half their rucking and scrumming started to fall apart, but they came back refreshed and strong in the second. The two teams fought intensely, and Santa Barbara decided to kick for points midway through the half, expanding their lead to 15 to 10. This put San Diego down by one try. As time passed and the Tritons still had not scored, a feeling a panic filled the air. The Tritons came close to the try line multiple times, but were not able to put a try away. The girls did not give up though and they were determined to score before the game was over. With just minutes left in the game, the Tritons got a lineout and were able to get set up on the field. The ball was thrown in and passed out to the back line. Jenna Anderson passed it off to Julia Anderson, who saw a gap and ran it up field to score. Jenna then kicked the conversion, putting the Tritons at a lead of 17 to 15 with just two minutes left in the game. The Tritons held the Gauchos for the remaining time, and finished the game with a victory. The girls face UCLA next Sunday, March 1st in Los Angeles.
