UCSD Puts Up Final Loss to USD
Monday, April 7, 2008 The UCSD Triton Men's Rugby team finished off their season and their spring break with an away loss against the University of San Diego on the 29th. USD got an opening score in the first two minutes. Mistakes made by the Tritons proved costly: The Torreros got some more tries from counter attacks off kicks that failed to find touch. Also what looked likea promising play for UCSD ended up being an interception and a USD score. USD also showed hard rucking, causing turnovers and making things difficult for the offense. USD had gained a hearty lead before the half time whistle blew. UCSD was not shut out, and Scrum half Chad Allen scored off an impressive individual effort. Beating the defense with kicks 3 times in a row and touching the ball down in the corner. The half ended with USD up 33-5.The second half was a lot more of the same story. USD was able to exploit overlaps in the gaps and ran a few more tries in. UCSD fought hard though, and got a try in the 75th minute. Flanker Hamid Tiamiyu ran a good crash ball and was stopped just before the line. Chad Allen was able to make up the extra meters for the try. Lock forward Stephen Schmidt, assuming the kicking responsibilities for the injured Will Cowell, slotted it through the uprights. A bit of a high note for the otherwise sobering 76-12 finish.
