UCSD Men’s Lacrosse Plays Rival USD in Weekend Game
Wednesday, April 23, 2008 Saturday’s game pitted the Tritons against their cross-town rivals, the USD Toreros. The game started off steadily for the Tritons. Early saves by David Piccinati kept the score to 2-1 Toreros at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter the Toreros came out with an offensive flurry led by attackmen Daniel Barber, but the Triton D held tough. With great individual efforts by Drew Wishnack at close D and Jeremy Adams in goal the Tritons survived the assault with only a couple goals scored. The offensive then did their part by possessing the ball and waiting for good looks. It was difficult to get the ball past the Toreros goalie Joe Williams, but the Triton men managed to find the back of the net on several occasions. By the time the fourth quarter began, the Tritons had acquired a small lead. Difficulty clearing the ball gave the Toreros a few extra chances on defense and they were able to tie the game up and then go ahead by 1 with less than 3 minutes to play in the game. Coming out of a timeout with only a minute and a half left in their season the Tritons stuck their best long pole on the Toreros best attackmen. The Tritons then doubled the ball and were able to get possession with less than 30 seconds left. A fast clear to the attack and a quick pass left the ball right on the doorstep. The pass from Patrick Cleary to Tony Phelps crossed the plane of the goal as time expired in the game. Unfortunately for the Tritons, the officials who had been calling a questionable game to this point decided that the clock had hit zero before the ball crossed the plane and that there would be no chance for the Tritons to win the game in overtime.
