Tritons Get First Win Over UC Davis
Sunday, October 18, 2009 Tritons ice hockey started off their second weekend of hockey this season taking on CSU Sacramento and UC Davis. The Friday night game begun with the roar of the pep band as they made their first appearance at UTC Ice Town this season. Plagued by injuries, the short Triton bench kept the game close ending the 1st period only down 2-1 thanks to a tip-in goal (his first of the season) by rookie forward Asaf Bicer. The 2nd period didn’t go the Triton’s way as they allowed the Hornets to score 3 goals in the second, two by Hornet forward Brian Cowell. Senior assistant captain Mike Frederick scored the last Triton goal in the game, as they were beaten 8-2. The game was filled with huge hits on both sides of the ice, most notably, by senior defenseman and assistant captain Jackson Gilmore, who totaled 21 hits on the night. Saturday night’s game was another physical game as both sides sacrificed their bodies to make plays for their teams. Starting off on a quick start, the Tritons took an early 1st period lead with goals from Mike Frederick, Kyle McNamara, Casey Gong, and Zoli Berecz. Even though the 1st period was dominated by the Tritons, the 2nd period took a complete 180 as the Aggies countered and scored 4 of their own. It wasn’t until Senior Captain Casey Gong’s scored his second goal of the game was the 4-4 tie broken. An inspired Triton hockey team showed their determination and hard work by shutting down UC Davis in the 3rd period allowing no goals, while senior forward and assistant captain Mike Frederick banged in the final goal off the post and into the back of the net, after taking a brilliant pass from line mate Casey Gong. Returning to the line up Saturday was Freshman Gerrit Davis and Senior Matt Smallcomb. After missing Friday’s games due to suspension and injury they both played a significant role in the victory over UC Davis. The win was the epitome of a team effort as every player preformed to their potential, however; one player stood out and that was goalie Lucas Hidden who made his first start in a Triton uniform and came away with the win. The next Triton home game is Friday Oct 23rd at UTC Ice Town against UC Irvine. Puck Drops at 10:45 you do not want to be late! Back to News & Results
