Ice Hockey Finishes Up Tough Season
Monday, January 26, 2009 The Tritons finished up their 2008-2009 hockey season last weekend against SDSU and College of the Canyons. The Tritons experienced another set of disappointing losses this weekend. A feeling that could sum up the season as a whole. A faster, smarter, and larger Aztec bench dominated the Tritons on Friday as the Tritons suffer a disappointing 12-0 loss to their cross town (DII) rivals. Filled with player ineligibilities, injuries, and disappointment, a drained Triton squad hit the ice Saturday to conclude their 2008-2009 season. The game started off close as the Tritons took an earlier lead thanks to a goal by (D) Jackson Gilmore. The outnumbered Tritons were quickly overwhelmed as College of the Canyons rallied back to score the next 5/6 goals. The final game for the Tritons ended 11-5. The majority of the Tritons goals came on the power play as (D) Jackson Gilmore completed his first hat trick of his college career. A solid game for goalie Matt Hager kept this game from getting out of hand, as he stood on his head to make many tough saves throughout the night. With the end of the season the Tritons would like to say thank you and good luck to the seniors who will be graduating at the end of this year. Former captain Ken Yamashita, Alex Azuma, and former assistant captain Jeff Ponton have each given four years of solid dedication to the programs and we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. The team would also like to thank the fans, UCSD Pep Band, alumni, the UTC Ice Rink, the sport club department, and the athletic training staff for all their support throughout the season. They all have made a lasting impact on the team and their determination and support is greatly appreciated. Looking into the future, the Triton ice hockey team still has potential for success as many key players will be returning next year from injury and ineligibility, a curse that plagued the team during the 2008-2009 season. The current frustration and disappointment will eventually subdue. And as the team logs this season into its record books and prepares for the next, you can rest assured knowing the squads determination and love for the game will help bring about another competitive year of Triton ice hockey. Who knows, with more hard work and a little luck on their side, the tides may turn for the Tritons in the fall of 2009.
