Dancesport Team Finishes Season Undefeated
Tuesday, May 12, 2009 This last Saturday, May 9th, the UC San Diego Dancesport team competed in Latin and Ballroom dancing up at the California Institute for Technology in the “2009 Dance of the Roses” competition. This was the final event of the competitive season for the UC San Diego team and they made sure they went out with a bang. They went up against Caltech, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, USC and numerous amateur competitors. The single events throughout the day had several UCSD members making it to the final rounds and walking away with placement medals.Evan Klein and Azmita Jadhavi racked up several gold medals in Silver Syllabus competition, beating out all the competition in Paso Doble, Samba, and Cha-Cha/Rumba as well as 1st in Gold syllabus Cha-Cha / Rumba. Congratulations Evan and Azmita! Michael Kwon and Paulina Brodski took 5th place in Gold Cha-Cha / Rumba and 2nd place Gold Samba / Jive, bringing home their share of the glory. Nice Job Mike and Paulina! Despite this being Shawn Mailo’s first year on the Dancesport team, coming in with no dance experience, he and his partner Stacy Boven danced with fantastic skill and took a 1st place medal in Bronze Cha-Cha / Rumba and 2nd place in Silver Cha-Cha / Rumba, as well as making it to the final in Open 2-Dance, placing 7th. Way to go Shawn and Stacy! The formation team competition was exciting as well. The 3 competitive teams coming from UC San Diego went up against each other as well as Claremont Colleges. The JV “School’s Out” team and the JJV “I’m too sexy, Supermodels!” teams performed with high energy and skill. Claremont Colleges “Back in the 80’s” was a big hit and had clean lines and immense energy that got the crowds cheering. However, the UC San Diego varsity “Indiana Jones” team performed last and blew the crowds away with intense passion, precise technique, and faultless formations. The cheers and applause were thunderous. When time awards came, UC San Diego JJV and JV teams took 4th and 3rd respectively, Claremont Colleges took 2nd and the UC San Diego Varsity team took 1st place, finishing out their competitive season with a perfect, undefeated record! Congratulations to everyone on an amazing competitive year! Final results for the competition will be posted on their website at http://ballroom.caltech.edu/comp/results.html in the coming days. All members did a fantastic job and it was an absolute blast competing this year and making some great friends in the Ballroom / Latin dance world.
