UCSD Cycling Headed to Nationals
Wednesday, April 30, 2008 A group of 5 hardy Tritons braved the 1000 mile drive to and from Reno, Nevada this past weekend to take on the WCCC in the Regional Conference Championships. The events were a brutal, hilly out and back road race, a team time trial, and a nasty, technical criterium. The Tritons came into the weekend holding on to the last team qualifying spot for the Regional Championships: and with a shorthanded squad, needed to ride strongly to hold on to their narrow lead over UCLA and CPSLO.The road race proved for a long and painful day in the saddle. Rob Carr of the A squad finished 14th in a highly contested battle. The rest of the Tritons finished in the pack. A painful and dangerous criterium course awaited the Tritons on Sunday. Emerging victorious from the sketchy course was the Tritons sole B, Ben Reiter - who now has racked up wins in both the C and B categories! Rob Carr of the A squad finished a crash-heavy race in an impressive third place, nabbing a podium spot and securing the Tritons' team trip to Nationals. In two weeks, the Tritons take on the nation!
