Each group is led by three qualified instructors, most of whom have personal experience as former WO participants and are still studying at UCSD. Each leader has an extensive background in wilderness and leadership skills, and is trained in back country medicine. All groups maintain a 4:1 student: instructor ratio to ensure quality instruction and facilitate relationship building. Instructors combine their formal wilderness training with group development and interpersonal skills to provide an environment for personal growth.

We’re a dynamic crew who has spent countless hours in the wilderness learning the skills to manage risk and create fun experiences. Some of us were just participants on WO last year, while others have been working as instructors for several years. We’re all proud to be a part of UC San Diego, Outback Adventures, and most notably, a part of Wilderness Orientation.

WO DIrector, Lindsay Hall

Lindsay began her adventure with UCSD as a Wilderness Orientation student in 1999. Her sea kayaking experience and the amazing people she met on WO inspired her to begin pursing outdoor leadership. As a Revelle student, Outback Adventures provided a nice balance between a strenuous academic life and extra-curricular activities.

In 2003, Lindsay graduated with a B.A. in Human Development and traveled to the chilly waters of Lake Superior to begin working for Outward Bound. Since then, Lindsay has traveled the country working for various outdoor education programs, living in Colorado, Arizona, Minnesota, and finally returning to San Diego. Lindsay has spent over 500 days in the back country (and the back of her truck) and returned to UCSD full time in 2006 to work as the WO Director. Although she’s pretty convinced she has the best job in the world, when she’s away from her desk, Lindsay spends her free time climbing, running, practicing yoga, surfing, and romping around the wilderness.
